ARTIST STATEMENT My work embraces the time-honored practice of creating psychologically-resonant pictorial tableau emphasizing an evocative, lyrical relationship between the human subject (or artifacts) and the environment in which they are situated.

In my latest series, the juxtaposition of nature (the body) and the manmade (urban architecture) is meant to provoke a poetically-charged narrative. The pastel and charcoal medium—sticks of dry pigment held in hand—allow a direct, tactile process of building a compelling illusion by applying to paper, layer upon layer of marks and lines. Through careful, deliberate manipulations of composition, perspective, light, and color, I strive to achieve an expressive synergy between the depicted human subject and environment. My pictures therefore represent as much an inner, personal vision as a resemblance to the physical world.
